Maybe You Ought To Look Before You Leap

The Beach Boys are singing God Only Knows and I am engaged in some minor self flagellation because I broke my blog doing the very thing I caution my kids against doing.

I let impulse and fatigue push me into looking before I leap and things went to HELL.

Ok they really didn’t go to HELL, they just got messy because in the midst of trying to fix what a minor issue I turned it into something a bit larger.

Part of me is smiling because I am talking about First World problems. The initial issue arose when I realized the blog wasn’t showing anything published in October 2015 on the home page or within the archives.

Think About What You Are Doing

If the kids had asked me to help them fix their blogs (they don’t have one) I would have told them to think about what they were doing and to use a notepad to help them remember settings so that if it took longer than expected to fix they wouldn’t have any issues restoring the blog to how it has been configured.

Chalk this up as do as dad says and not as dad does because I screwed the pooch and broke something and spent the past three hours trying to figure out how to fix it.

Did I mention the archive issue still seems to be a problem?

I should have left it for the morning when I wasn’t tired but I just knew that it would be an easy fix and managed to turn easy into something different.

So this is post commemorates my mistake and is part of a concerted effort on my part to see if I can fix it by making a few tweaks and posting a new post (this one).

Going to hit publish in a moment, keep your fingers crossed.

And to think it all started because of a post called Blogging About The Stories We Don’t Tell.

  1. I hear your pain when it comes to breaking your blog Josh. I’m good at doing that. Although it must be at least three or four weeks since I did it last!

    I’d definitely recommend Mean Themes too. I didn’t quite go the same route as Danny. I think he uses Myth and I use Lore. They do look pretty similar though (I wasn’t stalking him really!).

    My wife’s Irish and she’s from just south of the Northern Ireland border. We’ve nearly got the whole of the UK and Ireland covered. I’m English, my wife’s Irish, my kids were born in Scotland, so we just need to move to Wales and… No scrap that. No more kids!

      1. It was really quick Josh.

        Everything’s done on the Customize menu. There’s a place you can add your own CSS in there too.

        The one thing missing from the theme is an option to add code into the header and footer easily. You either have to use a plugin or edit the theme directly for things like Google Analytics.

          That is good to know. I usually can figure out how to do most of the ‘heavy lifting’ but I have been known to bite off a little more than I can comfortably chew so I am trying to be smart about it. And I’d prefer not to pay the extra cash for them to set it up.

          But it sounds like you and Danny have had good experiences and I think a theme like Myth or Lore would improve the reading experience here so I am pretty close to pulling the trigger.

          1. One thing I’ll add here, mate, is the support is easily on par with that of Postmatic. Chris from MeanThemes is awesome at helping you get the CSS needed to tailor the design, as well as taking feedback on features/additions to theme updates. The MeanThemes Ticksy support site is easy to use, and very fast to get help with. 🙂

            Sounds outstanding to me. I am looking for something that doesn’t require a ton of work. I want to install it and have everything up and running ASAP.

            I figure I’ll have to spend some time on the back end adjusting photos and tweaking some stuff in the older posts, but I expect that so if I can get the main body looking bright and shiny without too much hassle I’ll be happy.

          3. For images, if you currently used the Featured Image option on posts, and they’re a decent size (think 1600px and up), you should be good to go.
            Otherwise, yeah, some little time going through some more recent/popular posts to update images will be time well spent. 🙂

    That sucks, mate. I’m wondering if it’s a Genesis think, as I’ve seen in some Facebook groups issues about sites being broken in latest update.

      I didn’t partake until after I ‘broke’ the blog, figured it was smarter to be straight and more importantly it would be more enjoyable to be relaxed.

      The ‘funny’ thing is when I put this post up there were no issues. It went right up and did what it was supposed to do. Makes me wonder if I clicked, ticked or did something else to change a setting on the post that didn’t act as it was supposed to.

      That would make more sense.

      But I am playing around with switching themes anyway, we shall see.

            Yeah I remember that.

            I was born and raised in Los Angeles but people say I sound like I could be from Chicago or New York. When I lived in Texas some people asked if I was born there (because they thought I had a drawl) but non Americans have pegged me as just having an accent.

            It is a long winded way of saying quite a few of my South African friends complain that Americans think they are British so if I am ‘working’ on the accent out here I am not particularly worried about whether people will know there is a difference between being English and Scottish.

            Hell I could tell them I am Irish and that I come from Glasgow. Sadly some of them won’t have a clue that I am messing with them. I could say I come from the Dublin side of Belfast, west of London and they’d just nod and smile.

            But not all…

          5. Haha, man, I’d love to see you try and pull that off here – especially the Irish one! Never tell a southern Ireland person they sound like they’re from Belfast. 🙂

            Accents are funny. In Canada, I’m told I still have a string Scottish accent, while my friends back in the UK tell me it’s softened quite a bit.
            So who knows?
