My 10.5 going on 30-year-old daughter says I won’t be really old until I turn 50.
It is hard not to laugh when she says it mainly because I remember the days when 50 sounded really, really old and I am not that.
It is still hard for me to reconcile the face in the mirror with the guy I see in my head because they don’t look alike. The only time I feel old is when we talk about school and I mention how many times my teachers criticized my penmanship.
It is an expression that is lost upon my children. They received basic training in cursive but it is something they rarely use if at all.
That is because all of the big assignments are typed on a computer and either shared via Google Docs or printed out and submitted.
After our latest conversation it made me think about hand writing and how many people still send out handwritten notes.
Is Handwriting Dying A Slow Death?

My christmas cards are pretty much the only hand-written letters I send each year. Aside from that, I basically don’t write.

I think that you are right. Hand writing in dying a slow death. With that slow death though, I am starting to revert back to handwriting. I actually start all of my blog posts as a hand written outline in a notebook. It’s almost soothing to turn off the computer and think about what I want write and not have to worry about the distractions that are surrounding me when I’m on my computer.
@therookiedad:disqus Sometimes I really enjoy writing by hand. It is soothing to me too, but I do so very little of it I have noticed that my hand gets tired really quickly, brings back memories of being a kid in elementary school.
As you know, I am trying to revive this! I have just sent out my first “batch” of 3 sent in envelopes addressed many years out of practice calligraphy. It feels good to use the pens, stationery and skills again and I hope that it brightens up the recipient’s day. I see that there is a movement to revive this (even Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls had a summer project) and when there is an opportunity, I share the links about why handwriting is good for you 🙂

I write handwritten notes almost daily. My kids, I am guessing monthly if that. I pains me that it’s a dying art, but it is the way it is going, or went. I still remind them to write thank you notes by hand. Those girls!!!
@Gina Based upon a variety of responses and my own unscientific research I think it is a generational thing. Hand written letters aren’t nearly as ‘popular’ with the twenty something and younger crowd, not so sure where the cut off falls, might reach into mid thirties.
But I agree about the importance of hand written thank you notes.
