Go Watch The Other Videos

The kids in the gym film themselves exercising and I roll my eyes.

Sometimes they ask me to move out of their shots but most of them are not so entitled or selfish to ask others to move. They politely wait for the space to empty.

Today a guy asked me if I could move and I said I would be happy to when I was done with my set. Since I was feeling particularly saucy I told him I make videos too, but not gym stuff.

“What kind of videos do you make?”

“I make videos for a girl so she can see my eyes and expression and the gray in my beard. They dig that. I made three today.”

“Oh, I thought you meant you do it professionally,”

“I am as professional at it as you are a body builder. Stop video taping yourself and go watch the other videos on more effective techniques for working out.”

Yes, it was a snooty reply made in response to his ridiculous request and attitude, but it is not the first time he has asked me to move over.

If you’re polite I mostly try to accommodate you, but if you’re selfish and obnoxious…not so much.

The Joys Of Aging

Felt a twinge of something that resembled a pulled muscle in my abdomen but wasn’t sure. Tested things out and felt something, but still wasn’t certain

Decided not to lift for a day or two and focus on cardio but still found myself drifting towards lighter weights.

Wondered if this came from an unexpected sneeze the other day or if something else caused it. Got some random aches and pains that come and go from time to time that I attribute to aging.

Or more accurately attribute to the things I did when I was a bit younger. Jumping off of roofs, bikes and or diving on the floor for basketballs.

Assorted tackles made during football games or times in which I was tackled and all sorts of other physical activities in which the old guys warned me these things catch up with you.

Not entirely convinced they were right or that they were wrong. Body loses some elasticity with age and it is possible I may have accelerated some of that.

Also possible I have staved some of it off by continuing to move and stretch. A good part of this is mental, believe you can and you might.

Granted that doesn’t mean belief in flight will give you wings or that you’ll learn how to levitate, but if you believe you are younger than the calendar says you might find truth there.

There is truth in use it or lose it.

****

Reminded some of my friends with new college students to get their power of attorney forms together.

One of them asked me why and I asked them what they would do if god forbid some sort of medical emergency or other situation cropped up.

“Your child is considered to be an adult and if something happens you may not be able to assist them without their consent. If something horrible happens they might not be able to provide it, better to be prepared.”

It is a strange and uncomfortable idea but things happen. Every year I was in high school one or more students died. Every year I was in college I heard about a student dying.

Drunk drivers, car and bike accidents all played a role.

I know multiple people who got cancer. Some of those people are contemporaries of mine and have been diagnosed within the last few months.

Things happen.

We hope and pray they don’t, but things happen so we do the best we can to be prepared.

Old Email Addresses

I appear to be locked out of two old email addresses and can’t decide if I am truly bothered by it. Part of me wonders if they have been closed by the provider or if some hacker took them over.

Another part of me wonders if it matters. Is there anything there that I really miss or need to have.

The people who I care most about reaching me ought to be able to find me, assuming they don’t already have my contact information.

And the others, well it is probably not that important and ever I need to find them I probably can. Can’t tell who that might be so that is probably a good sign of their importance.

Maybe the real issue is I don’t like being locked out. Maybe I’d rather be able to ignore it and visit if and when I ever feel the need.

Maybe.

    1. TheJackB – Someone complained that this page doesn’t tell you what to expect to find here in this blog so I aim to rectify this with the next line. I am a father who writes about life, parenting, business, politics and fiction. I don’t use an editorial calendar because I don’t map out what I am going to write that far in advance. The primary focus will be on things that relate to children and parenting. But the nifty thing about that is that encompasses a wide range of things. Sometimes I work with companies on their PR/Marketing efforts. If they provide products or services I will disclose it. Here is an incomplete list of companies that I am currently or have recently worked with: Nintendo, Philips Norelco, Subway, Frigidaire and Mattel. Want to know more about me, keep reading. If I wanted to provide a professional description it would looks similar to this: Jack has a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from California State University Northridge. He has been writing for print and web publications for more than twenty years, covering a wide range of topics including: business, technology, parenting, politics, education, sports and religion. That is far too serious so I prefer to use something like: The Jack B. is a writer and author of 39 unpublished books and three screenplays. A former athlete and would be superhero he still fights for truth, justice and the American Way. Though he may look like a grown man, don’t fool yourself he is still a boy at heart. When he is not engaged in Walter Mitty like fantasies he is a husband, father and friend and blogs at TheJackB. Hmm…obviously I have since moved from Random Thoughts over to this place, but that is ok. This page is a work in progress which is a good description for me. I’ll probably tweak this on a regular basis so feel free to keep checking back in because you never know what might show up. I am a prolific writer and update frequently so don’t forget to scroll down the page to see what nugget of wisdom you just might have missed. Here is a short selection of posts to get you started.
