Do You Read Newspapers?

Until quite recently I received a hard copy of my local newspaper on a daily basis.

I did it because I really enjoy reading the paper and because it was important to me for my children to see that we are active readers of both news and fiction.

They need to be active participants in life and society and part of doing that involves making sure you are informed.

However we reached a time where I realized that I consuming the majority of news online and just a portion of it via that hard copy of the paper so I had adjust my subscription.

Actually I had to do it twice, the first was from daily to Thursday-Sun and then just to Sunday.

I did it because I wasn’t reading the hard copy every day and it seemed like a terrible waste of paper so I reluctantly adjusted to the current schedule.

My news reading is still daily, but the primary source is electronic.

It Changed Long Ago

Truth is that change took place long ago because for years the hard copy of the paper has been a supplement. That is what happens when you can’t update at mouse speed.

But I felt guilty about it for a while and guilty again when I cut down to just one day a week.

So I am curious dear reader about your reading habits, do you still receive a hard copy of a newspaper and if so, how often do you get/read it?

Hey there mate,

We get a free local paper (that’s as big as any national broadsheet) every day of the week. We never read it, it simply goes directly to the recycle bin. Like you, we consume our news online.

With books, it’s different. Because our kids are still very young (three and five respectively), we’ll ensure only physical books are read. Even when they’re playing games and my wife and I want to read, we’ll pull out a physical book from our downstairs library. This may change as the kids get older, but I’d like to think not.

TheJackB – Someone complained that this page doesn’t tell you what to expect to find here in this blog so I aim to rectify this with the next line. I am a father who writes about life, parenting, business, politics and fiction. I don’t use an editorial calendar because I don’t map out what I am going to write that far in advance. The primary focus will be on things that relate to children and parenting. But the nifty thing about that is that encompasses a wide range of things. Sometimes I work with companies on their PR/Marketing efforts. If they provide products or services I will disclose it. Here is an incomplete list of companies that I am currently or have recently worked with: Nintendo, Philips Norelco, Subway, Frigidaire and Mattel. Want to know more about me, keep reading. If I wanted to provide a professional description it would looks similar to this: Jack has a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from California State University Northridge. He has been writing for print and web publications for more than twenty years, covering a wide range of topics including: business, technology, parenting, politics, education, sports and religion. That is far too serious so I prefer to use something like: The Jack B. is a writer and author of 39 unpublished books and three screenplays. A former athlete and would be superhero he still fights for truth, justice and the American Way. Though he may look like a grown man, don’t fool yourself he is still a boy at heart. When he is not engaged in Walter Mitty like fantasies he is a husband, father and friend and blogs at TheJackB. Hmm…obviously I have since moved from Random Thoughts over to this place, but that is ok. This page is a work in progress which is a good description for me. I’ll probably tweak this on a regular basis so feel free to keep checking back in because you never know what might show up. I miss reading the paper each day, I truly do. But when you spend as much time as I do in front of the computer or on a smartphone there is no reason not to follow online.

Not to mention that now I read multiple sources from multiple countries where I used to just get the one POV and info focused on one place. I love the pace and the ability to take a broader or deeper look.

I am a big fan of teaching the wee ones to read with real books. In my world there is no replacing the joy and pleasure of holding a real book.

That being said I have no problem using a Kindle or other e-reader. My primary goal is to do whatever I can to help my kids understand the importance of reading and the joy.
