Do You Still Read Books/Magazines?

A while back I asked you to let me know how many magazines you read because I was curious to find out if the magazines you subscribed to were actually read of if they served as decorations or paper weights.

Yesterday afternoon I overheard a conversation in which a woman told her friend that she won’t read anything that can’t be found on her Kindle, phone, tablet or computer.

I can’t tell you what reason she gave for this. It might be because she thinks the electronic version is better for the environment or maybe it is the convenience of carrying 983,732 books on a small electronic device.

And that my friends leads me to ask you if you still read books and magazines or do you do all of your reading on electronic devices?

I am a father who writes about life, parenting, business, politics and fiction. I don’t use an editorial calendar because I don’t map out what I am going to write that far in advance. A former athlete and would be superhero he still fights for truth, justice and the American Way. Though he may look like a grown man, don’t fool yourself he is still a boy at heart. When he is not engaged in Walter Mitty like fantasies he is a husband, father and friend and blogs at TheJackB. Hmm…obviously I have since moved from Random Thoughts over to this place, but that is ok. This page is a work in progress which is a good description for me.     I prefer magazines and books. However, there are some books that I read on my iPad – usually the easy, mindless summer reads. I can mark up books, flag a page, flip to my favorite parts, etc.

  3. I read a ton. In fact, I’ve challenged myself to read 150 books this calendar year. I read in all formats, but I admit that I read digital most because it’s just more convenient. One thing I’ve noticed is that I tend to prefer a physical book when I’m reading for learning/understanding instead of just for pleasure. I love magazines, but I don’t read many anymore because I focus my reading time on books.

  4. I still get both. My wife bought me a book collection at Christmas which I am still working my way through. I also still buy a magazine or two and get one or two free ones from groups I’m in. I like being able to pick them up and quickly pick up where I was last reading with out having to log in, open the App or leave it to be charged.

    I also find that I get less hassle from my wife and kids if I’m reading a paper, book or magazine rather than reading something off my kindle or Kobo apps on my phone or tablet. Apparently its very anti-social or so I’m informed.

    Which is a bit unfair, because she “borrowed” my Kindle and had it so long that we had to replace it with a new one when it died a final death. It’s her kindle now and she reads it all the time, which is apparently OK.

      That is interesting. I have heard similar comments about my reading on the Kindle versus a book/magazine. I wonder if that is a perception we shall see change over time.

    I really like holding a book in my hand but I have to admit that Kindles have been growing on me because I love having so much reading material available to me at any time.

  7. I recently asked about magazines people read in the dad bloggers group and few people responded. I don’t get any at this point except for what comes free in the mail. My wife still gets a couple of magazines. 
    I do get books out of the library. I wouldn’t buy a book unless I loved it and wanted to keep it  If that were the case, I’d want to get a hardback so it would stay better.

      I read magazines for personal and professional reasons. I still buy books, but with less frequency than I used to.

Yes, I still order paper books from Amazon, but no more magazines enter my door to clutter up the place (nor do I read them on a Kindle).  Which way I order a book for myself depends on cost, need and convenience.  I miss having a bookstore nearby where I can just get lost perusing the shelves.  My son will ONLY read something he can hold, destroy and take to school and since he goes through about a million books a year, I have two baker’s racks and 6 bookshelves for his stuff and still the tables are piled high.  Can’t talk him into a Kindle 🙂  Maybe I should introduce him to that lady.
