Use Your Comments To Build Community

Here are a few words about why I chose to turn CommentLuv back on and am not using DISQUS or Livefyre.

Blogging provides a dynamic and fluid environment that lends itself to change and experimentation so if we find that this doesn’t work out the way we want it to we can certainly change things again.

The reason for the change is because comments help to build a community and that is what I want to see here. This place should feel welcoming and have an atmosphere that is similar to backyard barbecue or coffee shop.

When you do a proper job of building that community everyone benefits from it.

P.S. These Vlogs do a fine job of exposing all of our flaws now don’t they. Vanity is a wonderful thing. 😉

  1. Thought I would stop by and share the courtesy you showed to me when you commented upon my recent post. I’m not sure how to build anything online but I do follow the line of thinking that most people are sharing. So and but, I use Disqus. For me this system works, and that is enough for now. Maybe later on I will need or want something like you talked about here.

I am a father who writes about life, parenting, business, politics and fiction. I don’t use an editorial calendar because I don’t map out what I am going to write that far in advance. The primary focus will be on things that relate to children and parenting. But the nifty thing about that is that encompasses a wide range of things. Sometimes I work with companies on their PR/Marketing efforts. If they provide products or services I will disclose it. Here is an incomplete list of companies that I am currently or have recently worked with: Nintendo, Philips Norelco, Subway, Frigidaire and Mattel. Want to know more about me, keep reading. If I wanted to provide a professional description it would looks similar to this: Jack has a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from California State University Northridge. He has been writing for print and web publications for more than twenty years, covering a wide range of topics including: business, technology, parenting, politics, education, sports and religion. That is far too serious so I prefer to use something like: The Jack B. is a writer and author of 39 unpublished books and three screenplays. Hi Billy,

I don’t think there is only one way of doing things online or that we should ever feel like we have to do what others do.

If you have a system that works and are happy with it than that is the right system to be using. Appreciate your coming by and hope to see you again.

I finally made it by Josh and great message.

You KNOW I agree with what you’re saying here. To me, interacting with your commenters is the way to start building those relationships. Once you connect with your readers and commenters then they’ll be more anxious to stop by often because they enjoy the chatting. That’s what it’s all about right!

I’ll admit that it’s so darn much fun watching your comments grow and grow and how you’re really making a difference in your readers lives. I mean helping them along the way and them knowing that you really care about them is priceless. That’s how you build solid friendships online and from there the rest is history.

Thanks for sharing this Josh and I hope you were able to get a good nights sleep. That does always help doesn’t it!

      Hi Adrienne,

That interaction is a big part of what keeps people going or so I think. When you build those relationships and start to get to know people it makes it far more interesting for everyone.

The desire to check in with your friends and see what they are doing is just as strong online as in the so called real world.

  3. Hey Josh,

I made the switch back to CommentLuv about a week ago. Just having issues again with Livefyre and needing a system that was a little easier on my readers. Bob upgraded it to the premium version just this weekend and I’m excited to see those new features in play. So far, I’m liking it a lot better. One good thing that’s back is the ability to rewarding EVERY reader who participates in the community with a link back to a recent post. I don’t like the systems where the reader has to have that system on their own blog to get the most recent post link. Hoping I don’t have to switch anymore!

      Hi Judy,

It is a nice system and might I add that I visit Bob’s blog just to see what sort of things he recommends for blogging. I like his videos and post about the tech side of blogging. And I like your posts about writing- makes for a nice partnership between you two.

I am in complete agreement about comments and commenting systems. Let’s hope this is the last change for a long while.

  4. I absolutely agree Joshua. Comments are important and a way to build a community. I have tested Livefyre, Disqus and CommentLuv and to me, CommentLuv is what works best. I like how easy it is, and that I don’t have to think about to log in, and at the same time it feels like I’m also getting some “love” back with the link.

But the most important thing is the reply to comments (like you said), and if it’s easy to respond and if we get an email when we receive a respond, that’s when we come back and keep the conversation going.

Keep the videos coming and keep using CommentLuv 🙂

      Hi Jens,

Ease of use plus a link to a recent post sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. It is what I look for as a reader so it stands to reason I should offer the same sort of convenience and benefit to my readers.

I hope to leave things in place for years to come.
