Don’t look now but we are still working on building a community here. We do that is by sharing things like 7 Things I Want To Do Before I Die andΒ by sharing thoughts on The Importance of Creativity.
We ask questions like How Old Should Children Be When They Receive Their First Cellphone? and talk about why we like certain social platforms.
Intermixed among these posts we continue to ask for your input on big questions like How Long Does It Take To Build A Community?
But all work and no play makes for a dull person and a dull blog so let’s mix it up again. I’d like to ask you to share your top five favorite movies. And of course as you loyal servant I will begin. In fact I’ll even up the ante by sharing a few more bits and pieces.

Hi Josh,
Great question. Mine are:
Sliding Doors
A Simple Plan
Titanic
Anything by Hitchcock
Philadelphia Story
My husband and I are in the process of watching the American Film Institute’s Top 100 movies and enjoying some of the classics.
Josh
Hi Carolyn,
I like Hitchcock movies too. I have only seen pieces of Sliding Doors so I need to make a point to rent that and watch it in full.
One of the these days I need to review all of the films on AFI’s list and see the ones I haven’t watched yet.
Carolyn
I think you’ll enjoy Sliding Doors. I hope you have a chance to watch A Simple Plan too. It really makes you look at life a different way.
Josh
I have made a note of it.

I can never do something like that. I watch a lot of movies, and I always end up enjoying some of the new movies I just watched and forget if they’re better or worse than some of my old favorites. Like now, I’ve just watched the latest batman movie and it was awesome and right now it’s one of my top 5 movies of all time, but I doubt that it would make the list if I’d watch all the other movies again π
Josh
Hi Jens,
I can appreciate that. I expect that if I watched some movies again I would feel like I need to consider whether they belong on the list or not.
Fortunately this sort of list making is simple and has no real impact on anything important. It is just fun.

Why am I not surprised that The Sound of Music is on your list? Seriously love that movie!
Josh
I am guessing you are referring to the John Cusack film. It doesn’t fall into my top 25 but I bet it is in my top 50. If it is on cable I am always happy to watch.
Van Morrison is a favorite- so many good songs.
Craig McBreen
These always come to the top for me. The only movies I’ve watched more than once:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Saving Private Ryan
Goodfellas
Aliens
It’s a Wonderful Life
The Matrix
Braveheart
The Terminator
Jaws
The Shawshank Redemption
Fight Club
The Pianist
The Deer Hunter
Sideways

It sounds like we have very similar taste which obviously means you are a man of great culture, sound ideals and strength of character.

I am an Indian – so a few Indian movies, music and authors on my list! I listen to English music – except Charles (not familiar with his music), I am a fan of the rest four mentioned here.
As for movies, the ones from Hollywood that remain favorites are Forrest Gump (basically any movie that has Tom Hanks in it), The Matrix triology, Julie and Julia.
As for books, there are so many I would like to name….
Josh
I am willing to bet you know more than a few Ray Charles songs but just don’t associate them with his name.
Hajra
Looks like you were right… I do know and like a lot of Ray Charles songs…. just Googled him!
Josh
I figured that would be the case. His music is wonderful.

Forrest Gump is one of my favorite movies too. I also like most movies with Morgan Freeman, like Invictus and The Shawshank Redemption
Josh
Shawshank is great. Certainly one of my favorites too.

:))))

Kaarina, My list included Sliding Doors too. If you enjoyed that movie, you should check out A Simple Plan. Like Sliding Doors, A Simple Plan stays with you long after the movie is over. π
