Some of you stare at the picture of my father holding me and I think about how life turns on dime.
I think about how my college friend Karen was killed last week on her way to services at the shul I grew up at.
I made the same left turn she made a million times on my way to shul. I worked for a number of years at the building directly across the street from it.
Don’t have to close my eyes to remember when it was a row of houses and a Boys supermarket.
Tonight I watched the memorial service they had for Karen and listened to people I know talk about their relationship.
I knew her because she used to come to our fraternity parties, but I can’t say I knew her well. Enough that at the odd reunion we were both at we’d give each other a quick hug hello and maybe exchange a few words.
But we had sixty or seventy Facebook friends in common because our worlds crossed over in places.
We share something else in common, we were both taken by ambulance to emergency rooms but I had the better end of it.
I walked out and she didn’t.
It reminds me how lucky I am.
Where to Focus
I have spent more time writing than I have in a long while. For a time I struggled with where to focus but I have spent less energy on that lately.
I just wrote and let things go. I published at the ‘Stack and figured I might cross publish between places some more.
That other joint is starting to get a little traction and I am seeing things that remind me a bit of the old days of blogging.
Had a few people tell me that I made them laugh and a few ask if I would consider guest posting.
Someone asked how I came up with Moisheleh the Meat Puppet Microphone and I said with carefully and with two hands.
Next week will mark a year since the surgery and in a few weeks it will be a year since my hospital adventure.
I am sure I’ll write about it some more. I am sure I’ll think about how it is good to get a second chance and how I am grateful to have it.
Life turns on a dime and we don’t always get the option or chance to do the things we want to do or see/speak with the people we want to.
I am grateful that I have that, not everyone gets it.
Things could go differently.
