It’s A Submission For The Queen

I want to say it happened ten years ago because that is how it feels but I know it to be more than thirty because that is the last creative writing class I took.

The assignment is one I can’t remember many details about other than I responded to something someone said with “it is a submission for the queen.”

An off-the-cuff remark that I took and expanded into a longer tale about how the letter I was writing was for the queen.

The smart ass responded with a question about whether I would be upset when the queen didn’t respond to me because I was just a peasant.

I snorted and said I was royalty which generated a snarky response from someone else who asked me what my title was.

“Duke of Destiny. I am he who has a soul mate who will excoriate him for not finding her sooner but will later say it doesn’t matter because we are inextricably linked forever.”

They responded by suggesting that I was pretty good at slinging bull excrement and told me it would never work.

I laughed and told them I had never had a problem with its success and walked away.

The walking away part was key because I had no idea what to follow that nonsense up with and figured it was better to try and get out while I was ahead or at least while I thought I was.

Suppose it is questionable but looking back upon my youth as almost middle aged man is a fool’s game.

Where To Next

I think I was in first grade when my mom dropped me off at the elementary school to watch The Phantom Tollboth movie.

Not sure why, but it showed up in my dreams the other day and I woke up thinking, where to next?

Doubt it had anything to do with some upcoming business travel because none of that is taking me back to Hawaii.

Yeah, during part of the dream I was back in Maui which makes sense because I am ready to go back.

I am also ready to visit the Mediterranean or finally make it to some island in the Carribean and not just because I miss my days as the Dread Pirate Roberts.

Sometimes I think that might be part of my retirement plans, time on a beach or near one. Time to get back into the surf, to feel the pull of it upon my body, to eat some of the freshest fish, to lie on warm, sand and to write.

I haven’t yet produced my best work though there are a few pieces here and there that I think were pretty good.

My number one fan absolutely has opinions on this but they haven’t been discussed in quite some time though I figure one day the fan mail will come again.

It is a good feeling to know this particular area isn’t just potential but highly possible. There are not many areas that you can look at and think you still have ample time to improve and get better.

Writing is one of them and for that I am quite grateful which is part of why I do so much of it.

There are links upon links of it out there. Got a few spots I realize I haven’t visited in quite some time so I figure I’ll do that soon.

Maybe while sitting in a hotel room with nothing but time, who knows.
