The Lies About Life

Someone keeps reading We’ll Do It When We’re 50 but I am not sure who they are or what they want, assuming they want anything from me so I shrug my shoulders and move on.

Finally got around to downloading Times Like This and have listened to it multiple times because it is of particular interest to me now.

Heard a guy at the gym tell his buddy that if someone raped his wife or daughter he would insist they not terminate the pregnancy and followed it up by saying he would kill the rapist.

The profound lack of logic in that made me wonder what would happen if I bounced a dumbbell off of the floor and into his nuts. I would have said his skull but it is clearly already made of mush so I err on the side of caution.

How you can claim to be Pro-Life while esp0using that nonsense is beyond me.

I hope to never be challenged with figuring out how to handle and or respond to that particular situation because it fills me with horror and dread.

Which is to say I am certain it must be far worse for the women that are forced to deal with such things so I fail to understand why the new members of the American Taliban lack the compassion to recognize they are potentially making an awful situation 10,000 times worse.

Never Enough Time

A half dozen different people have suggested I read The Alchemist and every time they do I nod my head and say I will, but I never do.

It is not because I am blowing them off or because I have no interest but a question of making time to do so. Thus far I just haven’t done it.

It is kind of funny to me because I push the kids to read more books.

My parents passed on their love of reading and I have been gifted with the ability to read quickly and maintain a high level of reading comprehension, but what I haven’t figured out is how to create a 32 hour day.

The Internet changed my life because it cut down on the number of books I read because I find myself roaming around the Web reading article after article on a thousand different topics,

It frustrates me a bit because I love tearing into a good book as both reader and writer. I love books and reading so much I rarely get rid of the books I 0wn.

They go on the shelves in my home and join me on the journeys from place to place, from city to city and state to state.

But there is a limited amount of time in the day and I like following the news, reading about my sports teams as well as reading about a million different things.

In a given day I might read two or three National Geographic articles, check out something in the Wall Street Journal, read a clip on the Mayo Clinic and then watch a YouTube video on repairing water heaters, car engines or a movie trailer.

Sometimes I go to the Merriam-Webster site and read definition after definition of words. I love that kind of stuff.

Given all of my other responsibilities there is never enough time to do as I want every day, let alone any day, but that is life.

****

Books are the one thing I’ll almost never say no to buying for the kids. Anything to foster that love for reading.

My 18 year-old is angry and irritated by the news out of Alabama, Ohio and Missouri and wants to know what the hell is going on. He is angry because he doesn’t understand why antisemitism is on the rise and wants to know what can be done about it.

I told him I am angry too and said this is another reason why reading is so important. If you want to effect change and impact people you have to be educated about the issues.

It is not a guarantee that you’ll be able to use your knowledge to convince people, but it makes it far more plausible and probable.
