The man in the dragon shirt did not expect to wake up and discover he could run through walls in order to reach the refuge of the closest bathroom.
No sir, no ma’am he had cooked himself a nice meal and experienced a small rumble but never expected to wonder if the meat should have been called Nature’s Colonic.
But he was thankful for the little things in life such as being home when the storm hit so he didn’t have to race to find sanctuary or entertain people with a natural rendition of the horn section of When The Saints Go Marching In.
Given the refusal of his digestive system to consume and dispose of the meal in a more relaxed and pleasant manner he did his best to make use of his time and took to thinking.
He Is The Most Successful Failure
Many years before someone had struggled to find a way to insult him.
They had found it to be a very difficult task because he had done an excellent job of laughing at the insults and agreeing with them.
“You are a failure now and you are always going to be a failure!”
In response he gave them the smile he always gave his middle sister, the one that almost always pushed everyone of her buttons and made her lose it.
“You are right. I am a failure now and I’ll be a failure later, the most successful you have ever seen.”
It had the desired affect upon the other and he walked away knowing he had won but wondering why he was ever in such a position.
Do You Know How To Ask For Help?
It is a lazy Sunday afternoon and I wander through the parking lot trying to avoid getting run over by two teens racing their pickup trucks through the lot.
Loud music blares from both but I only recognize the music coming from one of them.
It is Closer by Nine Inch Nails and I am positive it is older than the kid playing it, not that it really matters.
What catches me is are a couple of lines in it and a wandering thought about whether I’d want my kids to listen to it.
The thought makes me feel really old but I don’t fight it because I have time to kill and I haven’t been in a position yet in which I had to worry about what music my kids are listening to.
Or at least as far as I know, they are not really listening to anything with questionable lyrics or themes.
They certainly aren’t saying stuff like sex, drugs and rock and roll as we did around their age and though I am not complaining I am thinking about what I would say or do.
Off the top of my head I suppose the big thing I want to know is that they know how to ask for help from their parents and not rely solely upon their friends or Siri for certain pieces of information.
Somewhere in the middle of musing about Closer and lyrics I think about one of my favorite songs by Rush.
The lyrics are far different than the Nine Inch Nails song but so is the title and the idea behind it.
With the inauguration around the corner it occurs to me that I hope the men in high places chase a different new reality than the one I worry they may bring.
Hope springs eternal and this dream is timely.
In some ways it is harder grocery shopping for one person that four or five.
My schedule is funny and it is not always easy to plan out my meals when I don’t always know what time I’ll be back home.
So in an effort to avoid food spoiling because I don’t get to it in time I buy less and try to hit a Kroger or Tom Thumb twice a week.
Sometimes it just doesn’t happen and I find myself debating whether to get dressed and go out again or to have something delivered.
Delivery hasn’t been as useful a solution as I’d like because I am told by many restaurants I am too far out, so much for being told I live in the center of the Metroplex.
But then again I am clearly not starving and usually if I go hungry it is by choice and not anything else.
I have spent a chunk of free time flipping through the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame videos on their YouTube channel.
It has been quite enjoyable and confirmed I have to schedule time to go to Cleveland to see the hall in person.
This isn’t a new thought but it has been on my mind more than usual, probably because one of the stations I listen to on Sirius broadcasts from the hall and mentions it during commercial breaks.
The only real question is when and for how long, hopefully not after a colonic described as meat. 😉
