Finding A New Normal

I have been looking forward to this day for months now because it is the first day of my new normal.

The planned job changes, moves, surgeries and business trips are finally done and now I can slow down and breathe deeply.

And I am grateful for the moment and the opportunity.

I’ll handle whatever you throw at me.

Torches, chainsaws, knives, babies, dogs or this that and the other thing are fine.

You throw it and I’ll figure out whether to catch, duck or dodge because that is who I am and what I do.

But it doesn’t mean I want to spend my days feeling like I have the pedal pushed to the floor and I am doing my best not to crash.

A New Normal?

It is probably inaccurate to say I have found my new normal yet because there are still a number of unknowns and uncertainties to deal with but that is alright with me.

It is ok because even though there are still questions to be answered I am in a position in which I have enough information and time to address them properly.

Prior to this moment I was so busy doing things it was hard to focus and I had to bandage some things instead of repair them.

I am sure if you ask my kids they’ll tell you about discussions we have had about how things should be done and how I have gently pushed them to do some things differently so that we wouldn’t have to do them more than once.

They haven’t always appreciated it and I understand because I wasn’t always like this.

Time, age and experience have had their way with me just as they do with everyone.

That is a big part of why yesterday evening I pulled out of DFW and headed for home instead of LAX.

Smart people figure out how to make their lives better and easier and stop banging their heads against brick walls.

Still it feels a bit strange sometimes to fill out my address with a TX instead of a CA but I guess that is just part of my new normal.

Finding A New Normal

Some things aren’t all that different from the past.

The dirty clothes from the suitcase will be thrown in the washing machine and I’ll take some time to read the mail that came in while I was gone.

I’ll hit Trader Joe’s and Costco today so that I have groceries and necessities for the week and maybe grab a nap.

Somewhere in the midst of it all I’ll find time to go drive around the neighborhood again and explore.

I need to find a dry cleaner, get a new dentist and new doctor.

Need to find out where my new favorite restaurants are and discover the places that help make life here feel familiar.

Probably won’t take too long for it to all sink into place and that is ok with me because as long as I know I am working on finding my new normal I’m pretty happy.

    1. TheJackB – Someone complained that this page doesn’t tell you what to expect to find here in this blog so I aim to rectify this with the next line. I am a father who writes about life, parenting, business, politics and fiction. I don’t use an editorial calendar because I don’t map out what I am going to write that far in advance. The primary focus will be on things that relate to children and parenting. But the nifty thing about that is that encompasses a wide range of things. Sometimes I work with companies on their PR/Marketing efforts. If they provide products or services I will disclose it. If I wanted to provide a professional description it would looks similar to this: Jack has a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from California State University Northridge. He has been writing for print and web publications for more than twenty years, covering a wide range of topics including: business, technology, parenting, politics, education, sports and religion. That is far too serious so I prefer to use something like: The Jack B. is a writer and author of 39 unpublished books and three screenplays. A former athlete and would be superhero he still fights for truth, justice and the American Way. Though he may look like a grown man, don’t fool yourself he is still a boy at heart. When he is not engaged in Walter Mitty like fantasies he is a husband, father and friend and blogs at TheJackB. Hmm…obviously I have since moved from Random Thoughts over to this place, but that is ok. This page is a work in progress which is a good description for me. I’ll probably tweak this on a regular basis so feel free to keep checking back in because you never know what might show up.
