What Kind Of Blogger Are You?

The Lost Art of Reading Comprehension

What kind of blogger are you is something I have been wrestling with for a while now.  That is because when I started this blog my intention was to use it for business purposes.

This was going to be where I wrote about best practices for marketing, social media and general story telling. It was going to be a place where I could demonstrate not just knowledge about business but specific elements of my skill set.

It was going to be used as a platform to build authority, a personal brand and to generate writing and marketing jobs.

So What Happened?

The answer is it did exactly what it was supposed to do. It led to multiple leads that converted into sales and then turned into a tool that led to full time work.

When that happened I decided to shift directions somewhat and I expanded the number of topics I covered here and spent more time writing about more personal matters, such as the chronicle of the move to Texas and the experiences I have had here.

I am not unhappy about the changes because social media and life in general are dynamic environments and you the people who do best are those who are able to adjust on the fly.

There is something exciting about the fluidity of change and moving with it makes things more interesting.

The Echo Chamber Is Real

The echo chamber is real and it is a problem. There are 1,983,322 blogs that are about how to become a better blogger or how to use social media to become a millionaire.

I have no interest in being one of them.

Sometimes I will comment or write about topics that others are focused upon. I might share my thoughts about how to deal with the changes that Google is throwing out. There might be posts about what to do about the death of Google Reader and Feedburner.

You might find discussions about how to use Google Plus for your marketing efforts and maybe some content about Google Glasses. That is because I find those things to be interesting and I have something of value to share with you.

But I won’t do it solely to feed the content monster.

Publish or Perish Exists Online

One of the challenges in building a readership and developing a community is the need to publish content with consistency and regularity. If you don’t do it you will find it very difficult to build anything of substance.

But if all you do is put of inferior content that lacks substance and is generated solely to maintain a presence you will fail anyway.

That doesn’t mean you have to produce perfection each time because you don’t. You can do as Vince Lombardi said and chase perfection but you cannot let the lack of achievement prevent you from publishing.

You Must Write

You must write. You must produce. You must share.

There is no single path to success so my way of doing things doesn’t have to be your way.

When you ask me what kind of blogger I am you will hear me speak about being a dad blogger but you will hear me talk about sharing the business/social media posts I mentioned earlier as well as these other tales.

And if I do a proper job of it you’ll find multiple reasons to continue to visit and hang out here. You’ll find stories that attract and interest you, probably not all of them but some of them and that is ok.

I don’t expect or need everyone to like or love all that I produce.

When you try to make everyone happy you satisfy no one and that is not how I operate.

    Well Josh, my blog changed directions as well. Seems like a lot of people’s do that.

    I started out writing about affiliate marketing because it’s what I was doing at the time, still am actually. It’s just a very boring topic to write about. Heck, I got really bored with it and obviously so did my non existent readers.

    So I switched and just started writing about things I was learning thinking that others are going through the same thing. Bingo, hit the jackpot but I did have to work at it to get an audience.

    I’m still just mostly helping people learn how to have success online and we all know there is more to it then people want to share. Oh, but I do it in a way that people will understand as you know since you’ve definitely been by my place.

    Here’s to just enjoying what you do, how’s that!

  2. Hi Josh

    Depends what I am in the mood to say. I have a number of sites, but have lost interest and struggle with 2 so I shall not renew the domain names. But have kept all I wrote, which I was surprised how much I had wrote. I might drop another to combine with one. Will keep a few that I can see down the line with what the possibilities could be. But my heart is into Necessity of Change. It gives me a chance to share and connect and it really is a constant evolution of our lives. So although it started out one way it really is not off the marker by changing, which I guess is a little ironic.

    Unless some one has a specific subject it would be quite normal to grow in another direction. But if it is so specific, I could see getting burned out with trying to create.

      You might have already thought about this, but I would definitely save the content from the blogs you are dropping. Sometimes you can take it and repurpose it.

      If you can make it work for you it is a pretty effective way to keep things moving.

      I have always been cautious about niche blogging because of my concern about burnout. Some people are really good at it, but I don’t know.

  3. I am a different blogger on my different sites. I am a “dental information” blogger on my dental business website. I am a “social media coach to dental professionals” in another blog, encouraging dental professionals to utilize the power of SoMe more. And I am ME on my personal blog (my favorite place to be). Practically speaking, it is intuitive that growing my presence in my two business blogs would be a smart strategy. Satisfaction-wise, I derive much more pleasure sharing my photos and introspection on my personal blog. So…I don’t know. Apparently I have a split personality when it comes to blogging 😉

      I am a fan of split personalities and multiple blogs. Different blogs serve different purposes and different audiences.

      But I am curious about something else.

      Do you feel like your dental blog is working for you? Is it generating more business and opportunity?

      Since you said you derive more satisfaction from the personal blog it made me curious.

      1. It’s funny that you ask that…I was just talking about exactly that today. Here’s what I think…many of our new patients go to their insurance websites, find our name on a list and then hop right over to my office website. My analytics show that I get a great and steady number of hits on my website daily AND when questioned, the majority of our new patients (I’d say 70%) say that it was my website/blog that clinched the decision to come to our office. So…as indirect as that is, it is still a positive lead and it keeps me blogging/vlogging. So, the short answer is yes, it is generating more business and opportunity. My Social Media DDS site results however,are different. But, I remain steadfast and determined 😉

    I think it is natural for a blog to evolve over time. My blog used to be exclusively about woodworking and now I use it to write my novels. Most of the woodworkers have gone, but new readers have taken their place. The bottom line for me is that I enjoy putting up my posts each night.

  6. I usually don’t have a plan other than that I have a main topic that I write about (marketing), and then, I sit down and write and produce whatever comes to mind. Sometimes it’s personal, other times it’s a tutorial. It all depends on what’s on my mind. Like you said, the important thing is to keep writing and producing. I am thinking that as long as I keep writing a lot, I’ll end up with something I can use a long the way 🙂
