It is a good thing I am not a superstitious man because if I were I might have misgivings about the beginning of this latest chapter.
You see midway between the old home and the Ponderosa the crown on the lower left side of my jaw worked itself loose. I suppose if this were a tale by Tolkien this would be the part where I talk about how the crown of power betrayed me and go off on some tangent, but it is not and it didn’t.
If I had any complaints I would voice them about my dentist and the quality of the work, but I’ll save that for a different day because this tale is not about crowns and dental work.
It is about new beginnings and the things that come with them.
A Three Day Adventure
It began with a three day journey through the desert and multiple states and was interspersed with hours alone in the car with nothing more than my thoughts and an assortment of snacks and interesting musical choices.
Consider “interesting” to be the euphemism for the various radio stations that I listened to during my ride.
I have about a 1,000 or so songs loaded on my phone, but sometimes it is kind of fun to hit scan on the radio dial to see what comes up. It is certainly better than listening to myself sing the lyrics from every song that mentions the words desert or cactus.
Not to mention the amazing rendition of All By Myself that I belted out while waiting to go through a checkpoint.
Plenty of Blog Fodder
The drive over provided ample amounts of blog fodder and I can only wonder how much more I would have if I would have been able to stop at some of the places I passed by.
I drove by the General Patton museum, Tombstone and Cochise’s stronghold among others and wondered what sorts of stories I was missing out on. Some of the stories are well known to all and just mentioning the names conjures up those images.
But what stories are lurking just beneath the surface. What is waiting to be told and shared with people who have never heard about the great XYZ affair of such and such.
That is what I wondered about.
There will be a different day and a different trip to address those questions, now wasn’t the time. This was the time to move so I could start a new chapter and I am ok with that.
That Damn Tooth
I don’t want to jinx anything but the tooth that threw the crown doesn’t hurt. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to take care of this ASAP because I do. It is an unnecessary distraction, but every adventure has a few of those.
Maybe one day someone will want to know more about me and I’ll share the story of the trip through the desert and how the crown freed itself from “toothy bondage.” Or maybe not.
Incisor way I included it here for my own recollection.
Stay tuned for more serious posts regarding blogging and business because there are more of those to come real soon.
I like that you’re taking us along on your journey. “More serious posts” are welcome, but please always keep painting pictures of the journey…I’m singing along with you:) Cheers! Kaarina
Hi Kaarina,
Always glad to journey with you. I have so many stories already, it is hard to know where to begin.
I love stories about long trips. When I lived in the D.C. area I would often choose to drive back to Iowa, even though the plane tickets weren’t too expensive at the time. I just loved the long open road. I haven’t take a long trip in quite a while, mostly because I just can’t afford it. (money is for food and editors!)
But, when the day comes that I’m selling more books than I can eat in food, then the left over money may well go in my pocket and gas tank. It is a big and interesting world and I want to see it!
Hi Brian,
Long trips can be a lot of fun although I have to concede that this most recent one would have been better with family and or friends. Some of the experiences would have been enhanced if I could have shared them.
But it was still fun and there will be other times.
You made me chuckle with your comment about money being for food and editors–that is the joy of being a writer. One day Henry will make it up to you.
