I have given myself five minutes to put a few thoughts down upon paper about Alito’s leaked briefing and the attempt by some to create the United States of Theocracy.
At heart I am a capitalist, believer in free speech and proponent of freedom to live and let live within basic guidelines.
That means I think we need some laws/rules for society to work.
Simple things like some basic traffic laws that help provide order so that people can ride our streets and freeways without fear of the road always being demolition dirty.
Consequences for murder and theft so that people don’t do bad things to each other. Yeah, I know that sound pollyannish and that some people will do bad things regardless, but the point is to provide structure and not a prison state.
I don’t want to live in a place based upon your religious mythology or my own. I believe in hard work and that it can lead to significant wealth.
But I am not a fan of having so much wealth one person or small groups can have undue influence on politicians, laws and media.
If we want to live in a place with a representative government there needs to be some structure that protects that and some of our protections are foundering.
The Scales Of Justice Aren’t On A Cross
Some people have forgotten the scales of justice aren’t on a cross. They aren’t on a Mezuzah or any other religious icon and they shouldn’t be.
Many of the same people who cry about cancel culture are pushing to censor books and speech they don’t like based upon religious ideals.
Those same people would go nuts if they thought members of different faiths were pushing their particular theology in schools.
The lack of awareness, willful blindness and intentional hypocrisy of those folks is problematic, disturbing and disappointing.
I am curious to read some better thought analyses than this one of this moment come tomorrow.
This may not play out the way some people hope and could end up splattering their faces with egg. Can’t say for certain, time will tell.
But for now I am angry and disappointed.
When you let one right be taken it is much easier to lose another.
Intriguing; maybe I should have read this one before I commented on the other one. lol I totally agree; if we’re going to value religion and class status more than fairer for everyone, then we’re no better than a communist regime or a theocracy/Islamic republic. Some might not like that comparison, but truth will always win out.
You’re absolutely correct. There is no difference in the approach some take. I have neighbors who want us to use the Christian bible as our source of law. I have asked them what is different between that and a country that lives under Sharia law.
Their answers are almost always particularly obtuse.
“Sharia law isn’t based upon the word but ours is.”
It never occurs to them some guy in the Taliban is saying the same thing.
