Why Bother Writing

The conversation begins with a question, “If you were dating would you consider seeing a woman who was almost 40 and then moves to whether 60 was too old.”

“About 40 is easy and the answer is probably and 60, well are we the same age as we are now? If so I wouldn’t automatically rule it out. Hell, there are probably a 1000 25 year-olds in the world who are mature and interesting enough to date now. But I wouldn’t go looking for them. Too weird.”

That is the briefest part of the talk because it heads towards writing and a question about what I know about my readers and if anyone is really reading.

“If no one reads your work why bother writing online. You could keep a journal and save the hassle of dealing with code, spam and all that other crap.”

I laugh and say I don’t think half of my stuff is being read now.

“If I stopped updating the various blogs it would probably be a while before any one noticed and I don’t know if anyone would say anything. Hell, I don’t update a few like I used to and no one mentions it. I still may shut down and start over or just go dark.”

“But you haven’t. Why not?”

“Sometimes it irritates me. Sometimes I wonder what the point of putting so much out there if there is no answer. It can feel like you are ignored but if you write for the sake of writing, well that is different. I freed myself of some bonds and decided to set out on an adventure and let life take me where it will.”

An Unexpected Invitation

I received an invitation to a holiday party today but I am certain it was a mistake. I don’t know the sender and don’t recognize anyone on the list of invitees.

I know a few things.

It is in Beverly Hills on the 16th. They want everyone to be vaccinated and I have the address and gate code.

Went through some of the invitation list and determined most of these people are significantly older than I am and several appear to have interesting occupations.

Took me less than a minute to find the location on Zillow and determine the house is 5,547 square feet and has three bedrooms and five bathrooms.

Hell I know this joint in the world famous 90210 was built in 1929 and it was last sold in 2003.

There is a ridiculous amount of information online and it doesn’t take much effort to learn as much as I did and I didn’t share all I know.

Google Maps shows a nice pool and about a 20 hour drive from here, or a 3 hour flight to LAX and about a 25 minute drive from the airport.

Got to tell you,  I am skeptical about the trip from the airport. Might be two years since I was home but I think the drive over is probably going to be closer to 35.

Had a lot of friends who went to Beverly for high school and spent lots of time over the hill visiting, but that is a few years ago too so what do I know.

Not much, other than people need to be careful with sending out invitations and what sort of information they share.

Got a live version of the Boys of Summer Don Henley performed on a visit to the Howard Stern show that some of you might enjoy too.

The thing about writing is I am forever interested in playing around with combinations of words and ways in which to tell a story or stories.

I can’t stop thinking about them, constructing and building them and then editing and adjusting them.

There is a constant stream of ideas flowing through my head and it is enough to make you crazy if you don’t find a release so here I am.

Hell, I float all sorts of different pieces of content all over the place in part for the release and sometimes just to see what comes of it.

Had a few people tell me they hate it and think it is stupid but I have had a bunch who have issued compliments too. Always nice to get a response but it really isn’t what drives me, especially in the blogosphere.

I just heard from another blogger they can’t understand why people blog anymore if they aren’t getting comments or brand ambassadorships.

Not the first time I have heard such things and probably not the last. My answer/comment is still the same as it ever was.

Been irked that I didn’t get the acclaim or attention that others did but never played the game the same way and definitely did not open up the way others did.

Good writing is subjective and it is a guarantee that not everyone will enjoy our content and given my proclivity for not focusing on specific areas that always drive attention and traffic there are no surprises.

You won’t last if you don’t like writing anyway and that is one thing I can say I have done. I have lasted and hung in like very few for whatever that is worth.

Never know what the tide will bring in or take away, just got to let got and see what happens.
