A Familiar Ache

Almost 15 years later something strikes me out of the blue and I remember how some people serve as your north star.

Can’t always say how or why it happens, just that it did and does again or so a familiar ache reminds me.

Gearing up for the second half with conversations about retirement it is easy to see how one can settle and just accept what appears to be the easy course.

Maybe you’re $2 million away from making some decisions or $10 bucks from another when that moment hits and you remember you aren’t the type to go quietly in the night.

Some call you crazy, some call you obsessive and others stubborn and determined but none of that matters.

What matters is what you call yourself and what you do to be able to sleep at night.

Cue epic music mix and stretch in your seat because soon you’ll be running.

Either you try and see what happens or live knowing you failed to try.

Conversations Upon Conversations

The good people wish to know when I am going to be in Houston and San Antonio again while reminding me I am to try to get to Austin once a month.

This is in addition to a variety of others cities and states who require my presence so that we may have conversations upon conversations.

Truth is I excel in much of this because I know how to tell a story that has a beginning, middle and end.

There is a point and a purpose to such things. Some of these moments make me laugh because there are complaints about brevity.

It makes me laugh because in other areas of brevity and I can be at odds, but not here. Here I focus and make an effort to be concise.

Outside of that, well if I am concise there is a good chance I have no interest in conversing with you.

But what really jumps out at me is the way we can stumble across some people who we trust intimately for no particular reason and how we just speak.

We share effortlessly and if not because we fear getting caught up in them. We wonder what would happen if we just let go and if they would be addicted to us and us to them.

A joint need to be connected and to listen to each other breathe.

Sometimes it happens that when you aren’t close the world just ain’t right or so the poets once wrote.

Adventure calls out with a siren song and if you don’t lash yourself to the mast you will go jump into the water and swim towards salvation.

And should you not find it, well you will know you did all in your power to discern whether head should have always listened to heart.

The days draw ever closer and sunset leads to longer nights with questions about whether you will pull your jacket tighter around you or find someone has started a fire for you to sit beside.

Joshua Tree At Night

Been a million years since my last visit but less since I convinced someone my parents owned the land and named it after me…if only.

So many places to see and stories yet to be told because the moments that led to the experiences that made them haven’t happened.

The ordinary waits to be turned into the extraordinary and so the days come and go with ideas about possibilities sometimes being acted upon.

Moments build upon other moments and reach a place where you either act or recognize it has passed you by.

The difference between those who let luck happen to them and those make their own is found here in this place.

You learn to pivot and adapt because sometimes the road less traveled intersects with where you wish to go, can’t know if you don’t try.

Maybe that familiar ache is the reminder that adventure is worthwhile.
