Things You Don’t Want To Hear

Alcohol, fraternity parties and fire pits can generate interesting moments such as the time a slightly drunk woman told three of us to never tell her dad we had seen her naked.

“He likes his guns and he is very protective of my sisters and I.”

I wasn’t worried about her father as I had never seen her in less than a bikini and even with multiple drinks in her she had no interest in speaking to me.

The guy to my left was the only reason I was included in her monologue.

Thought about it because my baby girl and I spent a few minutes discussing college applications and college life.

She doesn’t have any interest in the Greek system and I am ok with that. It is not for everyone and it is too soon to worry about it.

I think of it in similar terms to how I view her current career goals, open for change.

Don’t misunderstand to mean she doesn’t have my support or that I think her interest is frivolous because it is not.

Life experience has taught me sometimes we pivot and that painting ourselves into corners doesn’t always serve us well.

So I encourage to follow her dream and to have the courage to be willing to change if the need arises some day.

Roll With It

My girl is fiercely independent and determined to be able to support herself. I applaud that and love her focus on education.

Her area of interest is one that can’t be outsourced and provides opportunity to give back and I applaud those too.

I worked hard to make sure she recognizes I am not standing in her way or throwing cold water on her dreams.

All I am trying to is broaden the focus just slightly and recognize with a couple of tweaks you widen opportunity and give yourself the ability to shift if you so choose.

Blame that on a father who adjusted his focus and some dreams by choice and by life.

It is not always easy to accept those things and our job is to help lay the foundation for kids to follow theirs and be prepared to handle whatever comes their way.

She is and she will.

Writing It All Down Everywhere

Heard from a few family and friends today who reached out to ask if the “Steve” on the Price Is Right today is the same “Steve” that I am friends with.

“Yep, been friends since 10th grade. Wait until you see what happens.”

Put in way too many hours in the car and 983 telephone calls/texts/emails for the job.

When you manage to solve a few problems on the regular some people begin to think you are like Miracle Max. That is a mixed bag because I didn’t solve any complicated theorems or cure cancer.

I just connected a few dots for people who weren’t aware the connections could be made. It is the equivalent of teaching people they could enter through the front or back and get the same result.

If you know both doors exist there is nothing special about it, but if you don’t then some people think maybe you have some crazy door making abilities.

That is not to say I haven’t pulled off a few miracles but it is not something you can expect to see happen, daily or even monthly.

So it raises expectations to places I prefer they don’t go.

Better to under promise and over deliver.

Anyhoo, spent more than a few minutes this evening working on some writing because sometimes you have to bang on the keyboard like a crazy monkey without any concern or regard for output.

Sometimes you just have to write and see what happens by giving yourself permission not to worry about anything other than output.
