To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before

The great challenge of blogging is to find the line between honesty and over sharing. That is because people love the unfiltered posts in which we share exactly how we feel about people and particular situations.

Sometimes they read because the post is like a train wreck that you just can’t take your eyes off of and sometimes it is because it is well crafted verse that you relate to.

Consider the two ‘graphs above this to be the preface for my saying I am having trouble straddling that line today because the boundaries appear to be blurry to me so I am erring on the side of caution.

To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before

Sadly the Federation hasn’t given me my own starship to command so I am not going to be able to share tales of wild battles with Klingons, Romulans, Borg or any sort of trouble with Tribbles.

However I am on the verge of beginning a brand new adventure and expect to find myself overwhelmed with ideas for new posts and memorable moments. Opportunity knocked and I answered.

It is a big moment for myself and my family and I am have this crazy feeling inside.

This thing is good, it is excitement and a sense that I am about to grab a hold of the brass ring I have been trying to snag for  a while now. It is an opportunity that I can’t pass up but it requires some pretty big changes.

Risk Versus Reward

Sometimes when you are trying to improve your situation you have to mix things up because the things you are doing aren’t working and the places you have been visiting aren’t providing what you need them to.

Sometimes you have to take a risk to get the reward you want and that is what I am about to do. The time has come to say goodbye to the City of Angels and see what lies just over the hill and through the woods.

It is not without careful thought and consideration. This was not a hasty decision and it would be false to say there hasn’t been any trepidation but it would be wrong to characterize my feelings as negative.

They aren’t.

They are very positive and I am very excited.

I am not prepared to say or share more details about this here so don’t expect me to say any more than I have. If you know me than you know how to contact me and I can answer your questions offline.

I mulled over whether I wanted to use the quote above or one in which Emerson extols the virtue of experimenting in life because they both resonate with me. But I chose this one because something about it just made me smile.

It is a good reminder that there is virtue in being our own person and that there is merit in making decisions based upon our thoughts and no one else. Those who know me might laugh at that because I am not really one to do things just because others do them.

But this time around it is more meaningful because the kids are a bit out of sorts about this and it is a good reminder for me that sometimes we make the hard choices because we can’t grab the brass ring without taking a risk.

You know the sun is hot because you can feel it, but you can’t know all the details unless you go visit.  The time has come for me to find out first hand about some things so that is what I am going to do.

Tell Scotty to grab a good night’s rest because we are going to put the Enterprise through her paces real soon.

A few years back I left my job at GEICO, making 75K, to pursue building spaces in Second Life. I did very well the first year and have been poor ever since.

    Nothing like leaving us on a “cliffhanger”! I could take guesses but I guess I will just wait and let you share with us “what’s up”. I hope that doesn’t mean you are going to drop of our radar for a very long time.

    Changes are good and I know kids are not always happy with decisions that adults make, even if it is in their best interest. I would love to have my own big changes, but alas, it will have to wait.

    So with that said I wish you much luck and happiness with your changes.

    1. TheJackB – Someone complained that this page doesn’t tell you what to expect to find here in this blog so I aim to rectify this with the next line. I am a father who writes about life, parenting, business, politics and fiction. I don’t use an editorial calendar because I don’t map out what I am going to write that far in advance. The primary focus will be on things that relate to children and parenting. But the nifty thing about that is that encompasses a wide range of things. Sometimes I work with companies on their PR/Marketing efforts. If they provide products or services I will disclose it. Here is an incomplete list of companies that I am currently or have recently worked with: Nintendo, Philips Norelco, Subway, Frigidaire and Mattel. Want to know more about me, keep reading. If I wanted to provide a professional description it would looks similar to this: Jack has a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from California State University Northridge. He has been writing for print and web publications for more than twenty years, covering a wide range of topics including: business, technology, parenting, politics, education, sports and religion. That is far too serious so I prefer to use something like: The Jack B. is a writer and author of 39 unpublished books and three screenplays. A former athlete and would be superhero he still fights for truth, justice and the American Way. Though he may look like a grown man, don’t fool yourself he is still a boy at heart. When he is not engaged in Walter Mitty like fantasies he is a husband, father and friend and blogs at TheJackB. Hmm…obviously I have since moved from Random Thoughts over to this place, but that is ok. This page is a work in progress which is a good description for me.
