What Social Media Platforms Should Brands Use?

Social Media Outposts (Photo credit: the tartanpodcast)

Two weeks ago I fell asleep reading a 1,500 word essay on which social media platforms businesses should use as well as which ones are the best for personal use.

The answer to this question doesn’t require a long response because it is not complicated. What you want to do is determine where your prospective and existing customers are and be there.

It almost sounds too simple but it is not. Figure out where your people are and then build your presence there. The key isn’t setting up little satellite outposts all over the Internet either.

The key is building a significant presence wherever you are and doing so in a fashion that invites interaction, engagement and discussion. In other words, don’t spread yourself too thin. Figure out ways to most effectively leverage your resources and grow from there.

Is There A Must Have Platform?

If you have severely limited resources and had to choose one place to begin you should focus on your website and make sure it includes a blog. That is critical.

Very few people use the telephone book to find the telephone number of a business they want to patronize. Most use the web.

Again, it sounds obvious but people forget about what is right in front of them.

Your website and blog are going to be your hub. They are going to be among the first places the people who search for you visit and they are among the easiest to build. Do yourself a favor and build the sort of home that you want to show off.

We’ll talk about this in more detail in a separate post, but for now let me reiterate again this is of paramount importance. If you build it they will come and when they do you want them to stay for a while

What do you think?
