Movember

It Is Time For Movember Madness

November 4, 2012 by Joshua Wilner 7 Comments

Thirty-five years ago I desperately wanted to be able to grow a moustache and or beard for no other reason than eight-year-old boys want to do whatever men can do.

What I didn’t know then was that I would look terrible with a moustache and that my family would recoil in horror.

So when I decided to participate in Movember to fight mens’ issues like prostate and testicular cancer I had to think about my approach for a moment. I’ll share those details in just a moment.

If you are not familiar with Movember here is a blurb about what it is and what it is about.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. With their Mo’s, these men raise vital awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.

Once registered at www.movember.com, men start Movember 1st clean shaven. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

The Movember Effect: Awareness & Education, Survivorship, Research
The funds raised in the US support prostate cancer and testicular cancer initiatives. The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and our men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG Foundation. Together, the three channels work together to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programs in line with our strategic goals in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.

There are are friends and family members who are fighting the battle against both Prostate and Testicular cancers so I see this in a personal light which is why I am participating.

I am part of a Dad blogger team that raised more than $35k last year and would love it if you could help me. If you are so moved and motivated you can use this link to reach my page to make a donation.

When you reach the page find my picture on the left side and click where it says “donate to me.”

Moustache Versus Beard

And now I shall show you why a moustache isn’t the greatest choice for making me look “nice.”

Pretty Scary Looking. Not a good look.

Yeah, a beard is a better option.

A kinder, friendlier face.

Fortunately my facial hair grows quickly so I it will take about two weeks to have a beard that looks like a beard and not like I am lazy.

Yep, I am going to tweak the rules a bit and grow a beard. That is what happens when you look scary with a ‘stache. However around the end of the month I will shave the beard down and create a new ‘scary’ ‘stache  so that I am in ‘compliance’ with the rules of Movember.

And there will be pictures and or videos. Pretty scary, but I’ll take one for the team.

Again, if you want to donate you can find the link over here.

I appreciate your help and support.

Thank you.
